1. Lectures and presentations

  1. Dr Briffa offers a range of lectures designed to offer practical, easy-to-apply advice regarding several lifestyle factors. Lecture length varies from 30 – 120 minutes depending on client needs. Typical lecture topics include:

  2. Nutrition in a Nutshell – everything you need to know about nutrition in an hour or less
  3. Recommendations abound regarding the need to eat a healthy diet, but is there any real agreement about what this means? In this session, a science-based approach is used to dissect the realities of healthy eating. Along the way, major nutritional myths are debunked, including the notions that the only way to lose weight is to eat less or exercise more, that margarine in healthier than butter, and that artificial sweeteners are effective for weight loss.
  4. This session is based on the scientific literature, but its aim is actually to give individuals a ‘philosophy of food’ – a way of thinking about nutrition that will enable them to make truly informed decisions about what they eat both now and in the future.
  5. Brain Power – getting the best out of your brain
  6. The brain is a finely tuned organ, and even relatively minor imbalances can lead to impairment in thinking and decision-making. In this presentation, Dr Briffa explores a range of lifestyle factors that have been shown to optimise brain function in terms of mental energy, focus and concentration.
  7. This presentation also looks at strategies which reduce the risk of dementia and help preserve our mental faculties as we age.

  8. Staying Alive – how to add years to your life and well as life to your years
  9. Advice about healthy living abounds, but what factors seem to be really important in determining our health and well-being? This session focuses on the major causes of death, and examines the evidence for the lifestyle factors that are likely to be most protective with regard to these conditions.
  10. This session presents up-to-date information and advice about a range of factors including diet, body weight, cholesterol, activity and exercise, sleep and sunlight exposure.

  11. Dream Ticket – why sleep is not a waste of time and how to get enough of it
  12. When the going gets tough, sleep is usually the first lifestyle factor to suffer. Yet, while sleep may seem like ‘wasted’ time, the fact that we spend about one third our lives doing it suggests something important is going on while we slumber. This session explores the role sleep has in the health, and reveals the short and long-term issues that can occur as a result of sleep deprivation (including an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes and reduced longevity).
  13. The session invites individuals to focus on symptoms and signs that can be signs of ‘sleep debt’. Finally, practical solutions are given that are designed to enhance the sleep experience.  Specifically, strategies are given that are designed to help individuals get to sleep, stay asleep, and get maximum recuperation from whatever time is spent in bed.

How to Overcome the Energy Crisis – effective strategies for peak performance

Most individuals do not have a specific, diagnosable, chronic health issue such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer, but may nonetheless be experiencing symptoms that suggest that not all is well within the body.  The most common everyday symptom encountered in practice is fatigue.  Many of us, for instance, can experience a significant slump in the mid-late afternoon.  Some of us may feel fatigued a lot of the time, no matter how much sleep we get. In this session, Dr Briffa presents an eclectic range of strategies for overcoming persistent fatigue and optimising energy including nutritional and sleep-related factors.
