Interesting observations surrounding the issue of artificial sweeteners and their prevalence, Dr Briffa.
The cost of sugar has been rising on world markets and the EU seems to be no exception with a reported rise in the cost of sugar of around 60% in the last twelve months.
Too much sugar in the diet is by no means healthy, I’m certain, but I’m with your reservations concerning the potential undesirable consequences of replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners.
The ambition of the food industry though is to place sweet tasting products upon retailers shelves at stable and attractive price-points while retaining satisfactory control over the cost of ingredients. While I haven’t studied the cost of artificial sweeteners I’d hazard a guess that as commercial ingredients their price is advantageous over the fast escalating cost of sugar. Soon it will be very difficult for consumers seeking some degree of convenience in the products they might select to avoid these chemically derived adjuncts. Aspects of economics, rather than proper regard for the (health) interests of unsuspecting consumers, directs what is presented before them. The lobbying power of interest groups (groups with financial interests) seems to triumph over the best interests of consumers where licencing and regulation is concerned.
Cost per tonne in Euros of sugar is reported to have risen from 500 to more than 800 in the past twelve months.
Couldn’t find the research study that shows the aspartame causation… anybody have links?
But I did find this:
