Standard conventional medical treatment for the menopause is centred around hormone replacement therapy (HRT). However, concerns about the safety of HRT (it’s

how much omega 3 per day?
Have you run across much information on the Omega-3 fatty acid ETA. I have been reading quite a bit about it, especially as it relates to autoimmune disease. It seems very promising, but there is not a lot of information out there. Any insight you may have would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Adam
Jeannine,
My fish omega 3 fish oils are 1000mg per capsule and this contains:
EPA 180mg
DHA 120mg
You’d have to have about 6 capsules to get the EPA recommended but then you will be getting more DHA. They must have used another omega 3 source.
Apparently our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed in the range of 2:3 – 1:1 omega 3 to omega 6 oils in their diets. They would eat animal brains (high in omega 3) and obviously these animals were wild so would naturally have more omega 3 fats and be leaner than today’s indoor reared / cereal fed inactive animals.
I avoid all vegetable oils, except olive oil (which is similar to bone marrow fat in composition). I also avoid industrially produced Trans fatty acids like margarine. And I eat lean meat. Eating brains may not be a good idea considering CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) and I don’t think even Delia could tell how cook that, so I take a dessert spoonful of fish oil daily to help balance things out. We should aim for 2 to 3 grams of EPA and 1 to 2 grams of DHA daily.
Richard, It is important to take vitamin E with the fish oil as it is very volatile and goes off easily causimg free radical damge.
Interesting study. Omega-3 fats are great for many things, but now it’s also good to know that they are helpful for menopausal symptoms. Thanks!
This is a really good article!!! It is very important to take Omega-3 only a daily basics. Since I started taking a very good quailty supplement, I have benefited in so many ways. My skin, hair, and I no longer have pain in my right knee etc.
