In my practice from time to time I m consulted by women who complain of excess hairiness. Many of them tell a story of finding hairs sprouting in places where they weren’t there before such as their chins and around their nipples. This condition ” the medical term for which is ‘hirsutism’ ” is often related to higher-than-normal ‘male’ hormones known as ‘androgens’, of which testosterone is the most notorious. Conventional treatments for hirsuitism include the oral contraceptive pill (which can suppress androgen production) as well as spironolactone ” a drug which reduces the effect androgens have in the body.
This week, my attention was caught by a study which suggests that spearmint tea may offer some assistance to hirsute women [1]. The study found that hirsute women drinking two cups of spearmint tea for just five days saw significant lowering in blood levels of ‘free’ testosterone ” the form of testosterone that is metabolically active in the body.
While this study was short and was not designed to assess the effect of spearmint on hair growth, it seems reasonable to conclude that the regular imbibing of spearmint tea may help reduce hirsutism in women with raised androgen levels.
However, spearmint tea is not the only ‘natural’ approach that may be useful in the treatment of hirsutism. Women with this condition may benefit from dietary change too. Of particular relevance here is the fact that raised androgen levels in the body can be a response to elevated levels of another hormone ” insulin. Quite often, these hormonal imbalances come as part of a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), common features of which include not just hairiness, but acne, weight gain and infertility too.
Below, I have pasted a previous column which outlines a nutritionally-oriented approach to PCOS, the core component of which is a cutting back of carbohydrates that tend to disrupt insulin levels. In practice, I have found this approach is usually help in reducing the symptoms of PCOS, including hirsutism, though it can take several months for real results to be seen.
Natural approaches to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) – 16 November 2003
Even in my relatively brief time as a doctor I have witnessed the rise to prominence of previously rare conditions including hyperactivity, autism and chronic fatigue syndrome. Another contemporary condition, and one which I seem to be seeing in increasing numbers in my practice, is the exclusively female affliction known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). One frequent feature of PCOS is the abnormal sprouting of hair on the face and perhaps other parts of the body. As a result, many women with this condition can find themselves developing an ever-growing reliance on tweezers, depilatory creams, strip-waxing and the like.
For sufferers of PCOS, the cosmetic burden of unwanted hirsutism can mean that every day is a bit of a bad hair day.
Hairy moments, however, are not the only feature of PCOS. As its name suggests, the condition is characterised by the presence of multiple cysts in one or both ovaries. Also common in PCOS is a slew of hormone imbalances including an excess of male hormones known as androgens. A surfeit of androgens is believed to be at the root of the excess of hair familiar to many women with PCOS. Hormonal disruption may also give rise to a number of other complications common in the condition including acne, excess weight, menstrual irregularity, problems with ovulation and infertility. While it is now known for sure what causes PCOS, there is mounting evidence that the diet plays more than a bit part here.
The potential role of the diet in the development of PCOS is borne out of the fact androgen secretion is believed to be stimulated by excesses in another hormone – insulin. Insulin is itself produced by the body in response to rises in blood sugar levels induced by the eating of foods rich in sugars and/or starches (carbohydrates). Some have theorised that the rising tide of PCOS seen in modern times is related to an increasing emphasis on carb-based foods such as biscuits, bread, pasta, potatoes, rice and cereals in our diet. There is also some thought that a glut of such foods is also a principle factor in the increasing incidence of diabetes and its precursor known as insulin resistance syndrome. Interestingly, these two conditions are known to be particularly prevalent in sufferers of PCOS.
The best diet for sufferers of PCOS seems to be one based on foods that give controlled release of sugar (and therefore insulin) into the system. Foods that fulfil this criterion include beans, lentils, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, and most fresh fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, French beans and cabbage. If starchy carbs such as bread, rice and pasta are consumed, these are best had in their unrefined forms and in moderate quantities only. Regular meals, perhaps with snacks such as fruit and nuts in between, may help to keep insulin and androgen levels under control too.
In addition to consuming a blood sugar stabilising diet, the effects of androgens may also be quelled in the long term by taking a supplement of the herb Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens). One of the effects of this herb is to slow down the conversion of a major male hormone known as testosterone into its more potent form (dihydrotestosterone). Taking Saw palmetto (at a dose of about 320 mg per day), combined with a diet lower in sugar and starchy carbs, can do much to keep women with PCOS from tearing their hair out.

I had my doubts because the study mentioned that spearmint tea was beneficial to thosse with “mild symtoms.” Let me tell you guys that by the 2 day I noticed less hair growing in. Now it grows in still but not as much and it seems to feel less coarse. I couldn’t believe it worked so fast! I even have more confidence talking to people because the hair isn’t so blatent anymore. I have to look close to see my sideburn hairs sprouting. My face just feels smoother(unless I let the hair grow in too many days). But even better is the fact that I don’t have to remove chest hair as often as before. It takes a little longer to grow in than before spearmint came into my life. I prefer the fresh spearmint leaves to the tea. Here in CA,the healthfood stores are abundant so I can buy the spearmint tea when I need for on the go.I’m going on my 3rd week of this therapy and have no plans of stopping. What I did was buy fresh spearmint leaves at Trader Joes and I put a few in a infuser and steep for 5-10 minutes. I drink 2-3 cups per day and it has become part of my life. I love that it’s a natural(and cheap)way to manage facial&body hair related to pcos!
Oh and I recommend Amazon for those of you that don’t have access to health food stores. The benefit of health food stores is that you can buy the actual spearmint leaf boxed tea in the tea aisle. Boxed tea is good in a pinch, but I prefer the fresh spearmint leaves. The tea I saw in Mothers/whole foods is available on Amazon.com. I recommend buying a spearmint herb plant from a nursery. It’s cheaper in long run because you can grow it in a pot in your garden and use accordingly. If that’s not possible, I recommend buying the fresh spearmint at Super Walmart/Trader Joes or any grocery store. You can find it in the produce aisle with the herbs/packaged veggies! If all else fails buy the dried, crushed mint in the spice aisle. Look at the ingredients and make sure it says Spearmint! I don’t recommend the crushed unless you have no other options. The crushed mint is messy, even with an infuser. Whether you go the fresh/dry,crushed route, you’ll need a tea infuser. You can buy those for cheap at Walmart!
I am starting on a tea regime today. My issues with unwanted facial hair seem a bit more extreme than what I have seen here. I pluck 40-100 course, black hairs every day from my chin. THEN, I shave. I do that EVERYDAY!!! I am going to follow this very carefully. I have suffered from this all of my life and am desperate for relief
This article is great. I’ve heard of this whole spearmint tea remedy before; and from reading some of the stories feel encouraged to try some!
I have PCOS and have had laser treatments on my chin etc…it helped for a while but it just grows back patchy now…
@jj: I don’t have extreme hair growth on my face, but goodness on my stomach i have a ridiculous happy trail. It’s shameful. I am supposed to have a glucose test for insulin resistance checking but have not done so and I think I’ll go straight to the natural remedies for that anyway as I am not willing to take meds for it; I’ve seen those pills mess up too many girls’ systems :S
Because of the extreme hairyness I have I’m a little wary this tea thing won’t really do much; but I’m so willing to try it anyway. Will let you know how i go.
hey guys!
do you guys know how long we have to drink the spearmint tea to see results?…..what if we see results and then we stop drinking the tea..will it cause more hair to form than before?
has tea affected anyone’s menstrual cycles?…are there any side effects?
if anyone knows the answers to these questions…please let me know!…it would be greatly appreciated!
thank you!
Has any one had fab results from the tea? Would love to hear from them.
I drank the spearmint tea, 2x a day… and it did decrease the amount of hair I had to pluck each day… probably 50%…
Then I went on a candida diet. No carbs, no Sugars (except occasional RAW honey), no fruits (except green apples)… I stayed on this diet for about 3 months… and I got pregnant. I haven’t been able to get pregnant for years. I haven’t been diagnosed, but I believe I had PCOS, based on all my symptoms.
So maybe it was a combination of diet and spearmint tea which helped me get pregnant. But the facial hair never did go away 100%. Although it’s a lot less. Spearmint tea also is good for nausea, and ok for pregnancy so I’m still taking it. I wish I would’ve tried the saw palmetto. I’ve also heard that the natural progesterone cream may help… but it’s good to speak to a naturepathic/homeopathic dr. I think I will try to see a naturepathic dr. regarding my issues once I have the baby.
I’m wondering what mint tea would do to a man… I’ve heard it’s bad for their libido, but I’m wondering if it would ‘feminize’ them if they took it often and long enough… Of course there are some men out there who would like that I guess…
Upon finding this article on the effects of mentha spicata on uterine tissue in rats http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17120533 I think it’s better to not go overboard with spearmint.
Spearmint tea has been clinically proven to Reduce men’s sex drive when drunk often, because of the testosterone reducing effects, but I think that for actual ‘feminizing’ then female hormones would need to be taken.
can anyone pls tell me that shall i go for parlour during the time i’l have spearmint? Is spearmint n pudina are same
check out comments 41 and 42. I believe the answer is yes (reference the translation to hindi)…good luck!
thnks amy
I tried finding spearmint tea – and I have finally found a tea that contains 33% spearmint, 33% peppermint & 33% Japanese mint. I don’t know if this would suffice, but I am still trying.
I have just started drinking 2-3 cups everyday, and if I see any improvement I will post it here!
I’ve read all this with much empathy. I know exactly how women feel who say they feel like prisoners in their own skin because of this horrible affliction. Every single one of my troubles can be traced back to this one cause. I am depressed by it, becoming increasingly hermit-like, excruciatingly paranoid and it ruins my relations with my husband because I am so self conscious. I feel as though I am being put under a microscope anywhere I go with people looking and judging or pitying. I have never worn a bikini.
I was given Dianette when I was in my early twenties and it really helped with my thinning hair and hairy throat. My skin felt softer too. However, I began to get cramps in my legs after a few years. My husband met me when I was “normal” ie when I was taking Dianette. Two pregnancies later, I know I have no problem conceiving, but I am now early forties and in the last couple of years suddenly noticed the hair on my face looks thicker and longer! I noticed one night when we were due to go out that under my powder, it looked like a blonde, fluffy beard! That was sickening. I’ve been tweezing ever since to try and clear the long ones and live with the overall fluffiness. The ones on my neck grow through black!! And they get trapped causing spots. So ugly. I despair. I do not want traditional medicine. I feel sure my problem is genetic as my mum and aunt both have this. I grew spearmint in the garden and had some success. But the frost killed it. Reading this, I went out today for teas. I came home with some peppermint oil. I am told it is a more potent form, so am giving it a try. I also have agnus castus. We shall see if there is an improvement. I hope to God there is. I am utterly desperate. Laser won’t work on white or blonde hair, so I can’t get that done.
I’m so glad I found this thread! I’ve been suffering with all the same symptoms for years. Recently things are worse. I’m 35 and after having two beautiful babies I feel exhausted and desperate to find help. I’m considering paying for a naturopath, a gynecoligist and my gp have no good advice. First I will try this tea! My testosterone is high and I have another blood check in June. I will put back on here my results and any changes I notice. I found a Spearmint/Lemongrass Tazo tea I am starting twice a day. I got it at Walmart. Also this spring I’m going to plant a spearmint plant. Mint is really easy to grow and it always produces leaves quickly! Wish me Luck!!!
I starte drinking peppermint tea because I felt I was taking in too much caffeine. Over the last 5 years I have been getting about 5 hairs between my neck and chin. I pull them out and they come right back. I usually search for my stray hairs while watchig tv or doing something passive. Lately I was not able to find any of them, I found it strange because I was not aware of the anti-androgen effects. It was only after doing a search that I found out what was going on with me. What a pleasant surprise! I also grow spearmint which I brew for tea.
Ok, I’m going to try this. I’ve tried ALL methods of hair removal. Waxing, tweezing, threading, electrolysis (which has caused scarring) and now laser to which I’ve had SOME success, but very slow. What’s to lose trying tea? If I can find some I’ll give it a try and update how it goes. I really would love for this to work…
I greatly sympathize with some of you. I know this hair issue has really stunted me socially as well as in my relationship with my hubby. I will not let him touch my face and it makes me self conscious and feel like a hairy beast all the time (especially from hairy stomach and overly hairy legs). I did laser light therapy and it worked fairly well. I started with under my chin right in front – at that time it was where it was worst. The treatment took pretty well. Shortly after I added upper lip. After a bit I had to stop the treatments for financial reasons and over time some of the hair has grown back, but those places are way less hairy than along my jawline and lower cheeks (where I didn’t have much of a problem then so I didn’t get treatment). It has certainly gotten worse and I shave every day and pluck some days as well (the upper lip can go a week or so without shaving). The plucking and ingrown hairs from shaving have ruined my skin around my jaw and under my chin area. I have scarring and red marks. I agree with one woman above who said she used to love to just throw her hair back in a ponytail or different styles – I have been hiding behind my hair for about a decade now. I just want this to end. I try to take it in stride, but you just know in the long run how something like this effects you -and i know it has effected me greatly. One thing I am thankful for – my closest girlfriend has the exact same problem – so at least I have someone whom I can talk to about it and who understands.
I think I will try this tea regimen starting today. I feel fortunate to have many health food stores around me where I can find both loose and bagged spearmint tea easily. Unfortunately, I have always hated the taste of spearmint and loved peppermint. I think I will try mixing the two. And, for those couple of women who wondered about spearmint and pregnancy – I do know for a fact that peppermint can lessen milk supply in nursing moms so maybe do a search as to whether spearmint can do the same. Remember – your milk supply will come in before baby is born so beware of that if you decide to do it while pregnant. And now I’m off to look into that whole idea of taking it in the follicular stage that was mentioned a few posts back… though I am lucky if I have 3 periods a year so at this point I will start taking the tea every day – 2x a day. I will report back…
Just wanted to come back and update – I did try to figure out exactly what was done on the clinical trials. Only 12 out of the 21 women were diagnosed with PCOS so that should give some hope to those who have hirsutism for another reason. Also – they did take it dried, not fresh (I am sure fresh would be just as good, if not more potent – but this shows that dried worked well). And they took it during the first five days of the “follicular phase” of the menstrual cycle. The follicular phase begins on day 1 of your period so take it during your period and you’ll be taking at the right time! I haven’t read anything about it being bad to take it any other time.
An UPDATE!
So, I wrote weeks earlier that I will be trying spearmint tea and will update my progress here.
I bought dried spearmint leaves and added them to hot water and drank it about 2 times everyday for more than a month (I last posted on 8th March). I also cut simple carbs from my diet like sugars. I got my periods on time, usually my periods are not too regular. And my periods were not as painful as it once used to be. (I am not sure if this is an effect too, but just writing it down).
I initially thought the hair would just fall off on its own, but I think you need to pluck them. So I plucked the hair on my chin few weeks ago, and it never grew back. Even the hair on my upper neck has reduced a considerably, grown thinner and hair growth has slowed. So I feel great!!!
It feels great to have clear skin again. And cutting the sugar also helped reduce my waistline and mood swings. So I feel better than ever!
I believe I had PCOS, because neither my Mother or Sister have this unwanted hair problem. Wishing you all the best!
Oh my I almost broke into tears reading all these comments, I just bought that kind of tea and drank my first cup of this 5 minutes ago =) I know how it feels to have a hairy face =( I hate it it puts my self esteem down to the ground, I’m 21 years old and started noticing hair since I was 17ish . I’m a latina so I have dark facial hair the hair on my side burns is fine and dark but the hair on my chin and under it is coarse. I waxed my whole face before due to being desperate and sad but I found that it left lines and it was noticeable that i waxed so not what I do is just let it grow since my sideburns are hairy but not coarse and just shave my upper lip and under my chin and sometimes wax my chin tooo but sometimes I cant because that would mean letting my the hair grown enough to wax =( I do have a boyfriends we’ve been together for 6 years (high school <3) and i don't let him touch my chin or let alone my face, every times I sleep over I cover my face in the morning because I don't want him to see my hairy face or "5 oclock shadow" under my chin where its bad. its like a patch of dark coarse hair and its rough even when I shave =( he know this is my problem and that I'm insured but he always tells me that its ok and that I'm beautiful now matter what , but i'm to the point where I always leave my hair down I wont put it in a pony tail and when I try to go work out at the gym I get so embarrassed =( I hope this spearmint tea works for me and for all of you ladies as well. I will report back any progress within the next 2 weeks love and peace <3 pixie
well, as everyone else has been saying, It’s nice to know that there are others out there. Not that I wish this problem on anyone, but to know I am not alone and here others have the same issues. I have curly hair and really love to pull it up in a pony tail, but can’t. I spent LOTS of money on lazer hair removal and saw some results, but not enough for what I paid. I have some scars from waxing and plucking, and basically am just exhausted from all the work it takes to keep up with it. I also have really hair legs and its not bad from the knee down, but I get bad razor burn since the hair is so corse. Anyway, I’m in the same boat too ladies.
I started my period today so I am aslo starting the tea. The one thing I am surious about is, do you think it matters if it is hot or cold tea? I much prefer to make the tea and then let sit in the fridge to cool it. I don’t see why it would matter, but if anyone thinks it would, let me know? thanks! I will post back with my results.
I’m back with some results. I can’t remember when I last wrote here but I am definitely seeing the beginnings of some good results. I eat a few fresh leaves and also brew a concoction of spearmint and peppermint tea, about 2 bags of each, throughout the day. The coarser hairs aren’t growing back as quickly! The fuzzier fluff, or “peach fuzz” as some call it seems finer. I can hardly believe it. It’s definitely working!
I am so happy to find this website, my hairness has ruined all my life

I have coarse black hair everywhere on my body and pale skin. very coarse that I cant wax or epilate. when I shave it grows back after 3,4 hours even worse. It is many years that I dont have a boyfriend. I hate companies like nisim that produce products like kalo to rob the money from us, the miserable people who are willing to try everything to cure themselves.
I have tried everything so far, I will try this one and post my results.at least it is no expensive or chemical.
please people if anybody already say results post it here you know how miserable we are..thank you so much
Hi. This is weird, i was reading a book on skin, as i have problems with my skin (acne at 35) It suggested drinking spearment tea to help digestion and as i had some growing in the garden i made some tea. I have drank this for 1 week and it has definiatly helped with digestion and I noticed the hair on my chin has stopped growing, I was thinking this is weird.
While i was cleaning the computer desk this morning i decided to goggle effects of spearmint tea, and what do you know i found this site and others claiming spearmint tea helps hairy woman, amazing. It has definatly worked for me and very quickly it seems. I do think that maybe using fresh out the garden spearmint is a good idea. Wow thats so cool
I have been diagnosed with PCOS and also have the facial hair issue. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for four years. I have lost 62 pounds and plan on losing at least another 40. I have been on Metformin for several month. I recently started using a new product called a No!No! hair remover using something called Thermicon technology. It is supposed to make the hair grow back finer and slower. I recently read about spearmint tea and started it today. I sweetened it with Splenda…it doesn’t taste too bad. I wish luck to all you beautiful ladies out there! Good luck…I will be posting again!
Back again. Spearmint and peppermint are definitely, definitely working. In more of my research I discovered that sometimes the problem is that some people’s hair follicles are “sensitive” to the effects of testosterone, which lead them to have more or thicker hair where they don’t want it. The drugs mentioned in the article reduce the free ranging testosterone in the blood so it has less of an effect and spearmint obviously does something similar but is natural and won’t give us blood clots in the legs like the pill Dianette.
Saw Palemto is mentioned, but I have tried that and not seen the same success as I have with spearmint leaves and it is so expensive. The roots of the hairs which were thick have weakened considerably and I am not plucking the same offending hairs every day. One group of stubborn ones has not grown back at all! Also, where I would get spots as a new hair formed below the surface of my skin, I am not.
@ Jayne, Thanks for the feedback. How frquently you drank them? and did you mix them or drank them separately? Thanks in advance
Thanks Jayne please keeps up updated, I just recently found spearmint tea and will start drinking today, do you fresh brew you tea every day? How many times?
hey everyone,
i have plucked, waxed and used depilatory creams, they are okay and i am now considering laser hair removal. im wondering if that is effective!
around november of last year, after my extremely irregular periods my mum had taken me to the doctors, she said it may very well be PCOS, i felt horrible, having just turned eighteen i felt lonely. also around that time, i had a strange growth of hair below my chin but above the neck area. my mum told the doctor how to get rid of it, and the doctor responded that it was a symptom of PCOS. The doctor had told me that i had to get an ultra sound, i was very nervous. When the results came back, it said that i had Polycystic Ovaries, which was just as my doctor had predicted. I guess i am alright coping with PCOS, but my biggest frustration is the facial hair, i get so insecure when i see girls on television who have clear faces
Thanks to all you ladies, im willing to try the spearmint tea! im hoping it has a positive effect in making the hair growth less noticeable!
but what are the effects of this? all im hearing is less hair, better periods etc, this sounds too promising
ive also seen that spearmint tea enhances breast growth making them larger, how valid is this statement?
… im not sure if i want my breasts to be any larger than they already are!
thanks ladies!
Hi,
I am from Mumbai, can any one tell me from where i can buy spearmint tea
even am very hairy & want to get rid of it
Thanks
Hi Gals
Best way to reduce facial hair instead of spearmint tea…those who are not getting it
Mix 30 gm of sugar with 10 ml of freshly squeezed lemon juice in 150 ml of water. Mix well and then apply it on the face in the direction of the hair growth. Leave it for 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water, rubbing the facial area gently. Repeat once every week
Thanks
i live in Belfast n.i does any1 know where i can buy spearmint tea.Can i buy a plant and do my own. many Thanks
Mags again would this work for post menopasual women?
Whats the correct way to drink spearmint tea, should you only drink it for 5 days starting the first day of your period or can you drink it every day? I been drinking it every day for a couple of months now and it has really helped my hair growth but is affecting my hormones quite badly. I dont know whats worse really but I dont want to stop drinking it as it is really helping. Maybe I shouldnt drink it every day? Would it have the same effect for only days in the month?
that was meant to say 5 days in the month
very interesting article
Dr, Please tell me if peppermint (pudina in hindi) would work for hirsutism along with reduction of sugar and carbs intake? Spearmint works differently than peppermint? I cant seem to find spearmint in India. Which other natural remedies may work? Which are the best ways to get rid of visible hair other than laser and electrolysis, ones that may give instant gratification and also ones that may help in a long run (scrubs or external natural/home application) ? Thank you Dr, God bless you! Riddhi
Please give me a recipe for the tea that will work best, without much torturing the necessary nutrients from peppermint/spearmint! Both come from same family so will any of these mints work? Is there a connection with head-hair loss and hirsutism? I feel lethargic and loss of focus. What are the possible tests i need to make for the issue? Please help!
Interesting reading about all this…. I take “three mint” to help digestion….Pukka is the make of tea I drink, organic, unbleached tea bags etc., you can get it direct from Pukka or from Nutricentre.
The three mint from Pukka is
Spearmint
Peppermint
Fieldmint

I also take the three tulsi.
Hope this helps people looking for mint tea.
So I am sitting here reading all the comments, while drinking some mint tea. Thanks everyone for posting. I am embarrassed by how hairy I am on my face and stomach. I am a mix of latina and middle eastern, so I have really dark hair. I also have trouble with acne and I am in my late 30′s. Fortunately, my DH is so sweet and tells me it is normal, but I don’t feel normal. I had read about mint tea helping with facial hair before, but did not drink it consistently. I was pregnant and decided I shouldn’t worry about my facial hair. Since then I have had 2 miscarriages and I worry about PCOS, but do not want to be officially diagnosed. I rather address it with good nutrition first. So I am going to try to drink 2 cups a day for now. I am worried because some women posted about it affecting their moods and PMS, and I do not need any more problems with that. (In fact, I got here after web surfing a bit about natural hormone balance.) I do want to get pregnant again but DH and I have decided to wait a few months. I am going to drink the tea everyday for now, but might go to just the first 5 days of my period if I see it affecting my mood or when we start trying to pregnant again. I will post my results. Thanks again to everyone.
Hi. I am super happy to see all these great results from so many people after drinking Spearmint tea. I just started about 2 days ago and have been drinking two cups a day… I have to admit it taste pretty good lol. I have thin, fine hairs. But they are dark and they are ALL over my body. I hate it. My self esteem has gone way down and I am not comfortable with myself. I don’t know if it will work or not but based on the comments I bet it will.
The tea I have is not 100% PURE spearmint tea, but it’s black tea and spearmint put together… will it still work?? Help?! Someone please reply to my commment
